Malls Of A Certain Age

Good article that discusses the history of the mall, and how it can be relevant in the future.

"The enclosed mall ... is as dead as your average big-city newspaper. Which is to say: not dead yet, exactly, but no one’s betting on its future. Except for a few real estate developers, no one seems all that sad to see the Galleria in such a beleaguered state. The old-fashioned enclosed mall exists most powerfully now as a symbol of tasteless consumerism, ugly architecture, and bland corporate hegemony, revealing our recent past as unsophisticated suburban rubes. Yes, we were once dazzled by indoor fountains and Sunglass Huts."

I have noticed also that the malls I visit are all open and not inclosed anymore. I guess this is old fashioned and not attractive to shoppers. Some people are homo phobic anyways and being closed in is not a good shopping experience for them.

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I like seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality information. Shopping has been a favorite hobby for all since ancient times.

The problem lies NOT wheather malls are open or closed spaces but the types of stores and services.

Malls that exist the stores are almost all the same now compared to the 80s before big corporations gobbled up everything up.

For example one mall would have Walden Books and another mall would have B Dalton which catered to different groups like Walden's had a lot more kids stuff which I bought a lot of Dr Seuss books where B Dalton had a very tiny amount usually what I already had but B Dalton had a really good travel section and older kids/young adults stuff.

I also miss it when malls had unique selections of electronic stores to browse such as Software ETC and Electronics Boutique.

A third one was called Babbages not sure what happened to them though..

Even up thru the 90s each mall in different cities had unique list of stores and food courts.

Chico California mall for example had a Burger King Express in it which was not and still is not very common.

*Back then Burger King used to grill their hamburgers using open flames on a cooker and you could see it being cooked well* where as Mc Donalds even then used microwaves.

At that time it was more common for Mc Donalds Express to be found in malls and now for some reason they are all gone.

Every mall here in Oregon no longer has a Mc Donalds.

I used to see Mc Donalds packed with lines of people during dinner hour so I'd get mine either an hour before.

In fact in Eugene the Mickey D's was replaced with a food joint called *Hole In The Wall*.

The Lancaster Mall in Salem Oregon Mc Donalds was at least replaced by a very good burrito place that is unique.

The Downtown Salem mall also lost it's Mc Donalds.

It actually has the large burritos you see in real Mexican resturants.

I also don't see Mc Donalds in Wal Mart anymore which used to be a staple icon and the bench was great to relax on after walking around while waiting for Mom to be done shopping.

Do you know what happened to Mc Donalds no longer having express locations?
